I've never had any issues there and it's the most populated of the recommended stations not named Stamford. If theft and safety are your concerns, I would advise parking in the garage that is next to the New Haven Station. Morning rushhour traffic doesn't make it worth it to go all the way down to Stamford. Going any further down (Milford or Fairfield Metro would be the only 2 I'd recommend) just causes the chance for delays and traffic on 95. If Stamford wasn't 50 miles down the highway I'd recommend that because then you could have either the local or the express. There's no garage actually connected to the Bridgeport one, but lot's near by. New Haven, Stamford or Bridgeport have the most trains availible.
